This two year part-time qualification is designed for candidates who wish to train to become a counsellor working in a counselling service agency.
Successful completion of this course means that you will be able to provide a therapeutic counselling service within the context of an agency’s service framework.
It is designed to lead to an employed or voluntary role in a counselling agency in both health care and non-medical settings. Learners with sufficient experience can also begin working as independent practitioners in private practice.
This qualification could lead to employment or increase employability for those whose role is to support others in e.g. health and social care work, teaching and learning, advocacy and mediation, support and project work, other helping roles.
It provides an additional skills for those already in employment likely to lead to increased opportunities for promotion and advancement.
You must have obtained both Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills and Level 3 Certificate in Counselling Studies, or their equivalent. Accreditation of Prior Learning will be assessed on an individual basis however please be aware that self-study courses will not count (see our FAQ page for further information).
You will be required to produce an audio tape of a personally recorded counselling session which will be externally assessed. Complete 100 hours of supervised client work as a formally contracted volunteer within a counselling agency. You will also be required to complete a minimum of 30 hours of personal counselling therapy.
You will be expected to build a portfolio. The three assessment methods used throughout the training are review of documents, assessed observation, testimony and meeting course criteria. This ensures that all aspects of the seven processes of practitioner development are evidenced.
The CPCAB Diploma has achieved recognition from the Open University and has been credited with 120 points towards a foundation degree in counselling.
